Charming Fall Hair Trends for Type 1

Bouncy layers are right up your alley! But what about the bangs?

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being “blah” and 10 being “I love it,” how would you currently rate your experience with your hair?

Hair is such an emotional experience for women, and we want you to have a “10” experience with your hair. So with the help of the other Dressing Your Truth Experts, we are sharing four popular 2023 Fall/Winter hairstyle trends for your Type.

As a Type 1, you love possibilities. So if you are somewhere in the “blah” range of your hair experience, possibly incorporating one of these trends will kick it up for you this season!

Be mindful though that you can be quick to make a decision and even though hair grows back, make sure it’s something you really feel good about in making a change. If you love your hair currently, read this article to learn more about your Type and hairstyles, as you never know when you will wake up one day and say, “I am going to change my hair!” And we will be right here ready to help you!

1. Bouncy Layers

This one is a throwback to the choppy 90s cut that was made so popular by Rachel on the hit TV show FRIENDS. We’re seeing an updated version with more blended layers. This cut is known as the butterfly cut with short layers by the face and longer layers throughout the back. This look also resembles the 90’s blowout, supermodel hairstyle. Think big Hollywood hair! It is a voluminous, bouncy style that can require more upkeep as you will want to use a blow dryer and curlers to create a full, bouncy look.

Does this hair trend favor Type 1?

No brainer here, as the trend itself has the word bouncy in it! I might include one more keyword for you with this trend—and that is bouncy, messy layers. To get it right, this style will require some upkeep in getting your hair cut at least every two months, and a styling commitment of blow drying your hair (see how it’s done!) and using big curlers (watch that tutorial!) for a full bouncy look.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 1/2 – Bring the bounce down a bit.
  • Type 1/3 – Add more messy layers.
  • Type 1/4 – Go for more of a blunt cut to create a straight bottom hairline.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Voluminous, Free

2. Textured Lob

A lob is a long bob. We’ve seen this style featured for several years now. This season, the classical clean-cut lob is getting more textured. It is close in style to the shag and mullet-inspired cuts that we have been seeing the last year or two. With this style, you have the choice to go really textured and layered or more blended and classic. The viral “wolf cut” made famous by Wednesday’s actor Jenna Ortega is a very edgy version of this classic cut.

This style adds movement and dimension with fewer layers than the bouncy layers above. This cut looks best worn with a bit of curl added either by letting your natural curl come out or by using a hot tool to add in some movement. It can be a low-maintenance style with a relaxed shaggy finish. The classic bob that hits right at chin length is also a really popular choice this fall.

Does this hair trend favor Type 1?

Yes, because the layers add movement. With this style, as a Type 1 you have the choice to go really textured/messy and layered or more blended/bouncy. Avoid getting too edgy with this look by switching the reference from “textured lob” to “messy lob,” and from “wolf-cut” to “whimsical-airy” cut! As with any Type 1 hairstyle, if you add highlights, remember to feature them around your face to help your face “pop.”

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 1/2 – The added length in the lob will look really nice on you! Add some beach wave curls and you’re good to go!
  • Type 1/3 – You can punch up the texture in this look with more layers.
  • Type 1/4 – Keep it cleaner and more classic with fewer layers and add some finishing products to bring down the “messy” look.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Whimsy, Messy

3. Bangs

We’ve seen bangs come and go over the decades, and this season they are making a comeback. (Not the big 80s dramatic bangs, thank goodness!) The bangs we’re seeing featured this season are longer in length.

There are many names for this longer style: “Birkin bangs,” curtain bangs, and curve cut bangs. Basically a softer, longer version of the blunt cut bang. Depending on your current hairstyle you can cater the length of your bangs to work for your face shape and preference.

Bangs work well with different hair lengths and textures, so this could be a fun way to try a new hairstyle with less commitment. Because this style of bang is longer you can pin them back or blend them into your hairstyle on days you don’t want to show the bangs.

Does this hair trend favor Type 1?

This look lends itself to softer Type 2 movement, but we can make it work for your upward, light Type 1 movement! Achieve a light, playful feel by not adding too much hair to the bang section, which would weigh you down. Try curling the bottom of the bang flip out to add some bounce. You could also highlight the bang to bring in some brightness around your face.

Keep in mind that you look best with a little height on the crown of your head achieved by backcombing, and you want to avoid a straight down the middle part. You could definitely combine the bouncy layers and curtain bangs into one style.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • 1/2 – Add more length to create a little more flow.
  • 1/3 – You can go with more texture and layers to create more movement.
  • 1/4 – Go with a more traditional bang with less texture and length.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Playful, Light

4. Side Part

The middle part has taken women by storm for several years, but now we’re seeing the side part come back! This is great news for all 4 Types since the middle part is very severe and is reserved for Type 4s. In 2023, the side part is deeper and more intentional.

Does this hair trend favor Type 1?

This is a trend a Type 1 can say yes, yes, yes to! Just remember to add height to the crown of the head, no matter where your part falls. Think, upward, light asymmetrical for this one.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 1/2 – You can go with a deeper part on the side, creating a little more flow.
  • Type 1/3 – Your part would be best somewhere between Type 1/2 and Type 1/4!
  • Type 1/4 – Go with a part just off-centered from the middle.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Upward, Asymmetrical

Lots to play with this Fall/Winter season when it comes to hair trends!
