Youth gets plenty of attention, especially in the image-obsessed era of social media. Meanwhile, older people often feel cast aside, forgotten, and lost in a sea of younger faces.
Let’s stop the negativity about aging. There’s nothing wrong with getting older. After all, aging is one of the only certainties in life. When you think about it, that’s a beautiful thing.
In fact, it’s 100% possible to feel younger and happier with each passing year. Here are 10 strategies for aging gracefully, embracing new scientific breakthroughs, and reshaping how you view the effects of growing older.
Is It Possible to Reverse Aging?
The Fountain of Youth may not be a myth. The aging process of human cells is inevitable, but the signs of skin aging aren’t as certain. New innovations are changing our assumptions about the aging process, from the inside out.
At the Salk Institute, which studies the effects of aging, there is new evidence that the body’s older cells can be coaxed into looking and behaving like their younger counterparts. The overall effect is a type of “reverse aging” where cell progression slows and the total lifespan can increase by 30%.
Scientists are also exploring cell reprogramming, which can teach old and wounded cells to mimic youthful cells. In lab studies, mice with reprogrammed cells tended to look younger, act younger, even avoid age-related diseases like obesity, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
What Happens As We Age
Even if you believe that age is only a number, it’s hard to accept the age-related health conditions that come along with it. Growing old is the primary risk factor for multiple chronic and life-threatening diseases.
As we age, our cells begin to break down and our capillaries and blood vessels aren’t as strong. Our bones weaken. Our bladders become less elastic. Memories fade and it may be harder to recall familiar words and names.
For most older adults, the digestive tract becomes less efficient so it’s unpleasant to eat certain foods. Across the body, little aches and pains that might not have bothered us at a younger age begin to nag at us as we grow older.
All of the following health conditions are associated with age: arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, gum disease, and obesity. Even seasonal allergies can increase in intensity with each passing year.
Luckily, we have mapped out some promising techniques that you can easily incorporate to prevent your skin from aging. Because don’t we all want to stay glowing and radiant for years to come?

2- Discover Your Energy Type and Live It
This is at the heart of living an anti-aging lifestyle. Every person has an Energy Type that suits the personal energy, movement, and style within them.
Repressed energy has a negative effect on the body; embraced energy has a positive effect. What’s your Energy Type? Finding this out can be the first step to rejuvenation.
When you are in touch with your Energy Type, aging will feel like a natural extension of your true and whole self. You’ll learn to work with your energy, not against it.
3- Start Dressing Your Truth
Dressing Your Truth takes years off of your appearance. But even more accurately, it helps you look amazing at the age you actually are.
When you are Dressing Your Truth, you aren’t afraid of being genuinely you. This includes embracing your age and selecting clothing that suits your individual style. It puts a spring in your step, so you wear clothes more confidently, each and every day.
4- Get to Know Retinol and Sunscreen
Your dermatologist will agree that hidden sun damage from 30 years ago can suddenly become very visible in your later years. Every day, 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer. But every day that you protect your skin with proper skincare, you reduce your lifetime risk of developing cancer and other sun-related skin conditions.
At this time in your life, retinol, Vitamin A, and sunscreen should become your best friends.
I especially love the Wrinkle Recovery Serum and the Neck Restoring Cream. Both of these products include retinol, a vital component in anti-aging products to help rebuild lost volume and minimize the appearance of fine lines.
Use retinol creams at night and apply sunscreen during the daytime to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Continued exposure to these rays can cause serious skin damage, so it’s important to be vigilant about applying protective creams.
5- Phase Out Destructive Habits
Lifelong habits like smoking and drinking alcohol excessively can wreak havoc as you age. Make a plan to stop smoking tobacco products and drink alcohol only in moderation. Incorporating things like veggies, green tea, whole grains, healthy fats (like avocados and olive oil), and fruit help provide necessary nutrients to your skin.
It’s also a good time to make it a priority to get a good night’s sleep. Insomnia has proven negative health effects and can limit your longevity.
Although many people assume they can sleep in on the weekends and make up for days of lost sleep, science shows us that this is a myth. Lost sleep is gone forever and can’t be made up. According to a Nobel prize-winning study on circadian biology, the best plan is to schedule a consistent bedtime and stick to it.
A well-balanced diet with some amount of calorie restriction also seems to add years to peoples’ lives. Add some regular exercise, and you’ll feel more youthful for years to come.
6- Start Taking Supplements
With your doctor’s approval, start taking supplements and multivitamins that support your body’s systems. Vitamin C and Vitamin E have many benefits for the skin, bones, and brain. Calcium supports your bone structure and prevents broken bones later in life.
Other supplements also contain ingredients that may be related to an increased lifespan. For example, the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have shown positive results for longevity. Supplements with antioxidants protect cells from damage and keep you feeling youthful at the cellular level.
7- Take Care of Your Telomeres
At the ends of your chromosomes, there are caps called telomeres that shorten over the course of your life. This reduces your DNA age, also known as your biological age. If you can preserve your telomeres, it may just increase your lifespan.
New research shows that your biological age can be reduced through regular exercise, particularly HIIT – high-intensity interval training. HIIT is a strategy of performing short bursts of intense anaerobic exercise, interspersed with less intense recovery periods until you feel too exhausted to continue.
Sexual intimacy is also thought to have a rejuvenating effect on your telomeres, especially for women. Physical and mental closeness with a partner seems to trigger physical mechanisms that have a rejuvenating effect on the body.
8- Lose Emotional Weight
As you age, the weight of stress and emotional issues can hold you down and make you feel older than your years. Now is a good time to heal your emotional scars and free yourself from the mental weight you’ve been carrying.
Carol’s Healing Center helps people kick guilt out of their lives, end unhealthy habits, and get “unstuck” from the things that are holding them back. Consult the healing center for more help losing emotional weight and living a longer life.
9- Consider Skipping Retirement
Compelling research shows that for some people, retirement can contribute to premature aging through depression, anxiety, and negative health outcomes during their later years. Retirement simply isn’t for everyone.
Many retirees feel that their retirement is too final and too isolating. They may feel directionless or lonely, just when they’d hoped to experience feelings of deep satisfaction and peacefulness.
Sometimes it’s better to take a vacation, feel refreshed, and go right back to doing what you love. So remember: Retirement isn’t required.
10- Keep Embracing Change
Don’t be afraid to make a big change as you age. Big life events – like marriage, switching careers, or even moving across the world – aren’t only for young adults.
If you’ve been debating about a major anti-aging treatment, there’s no reason to put it off. In fact, many of these treatments are more effective the younger you are.
Youth is truly a state of mind, and sometimes a big change is good for your mind, body, and soul. As the Chinese proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.”
Anti-Aging Pills on the Horizon
The horizon of aging research is continually expanding. Some innovative new treatments aren’t yet FDA-approved but hold great promise for their rejuvenating effects.
New research at Harvard Medical School has found that a compound called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, is rewinding the clock on aging. It boosts blood vessel growth, restores lost vitality to muscles, and seems to be the first real shot at “exercise in a pill.”
When mice received NAD+, they were able to build new capillaries and blood vessels at a faster rate than before, which caused them to look and act younger. Within two months of treatment, the mice demonstrated 56 to 80% greater capacity for exercise. This occurred at the age of 20 months – which is comparable to age 70 in human years.
NAD+ tests in humans are already underway. So far, they seem to be showing the same kinds of positive results for human cells. Participants in the studies report feelings of increased mental sharpness and clarity, better physical endurance, and faster recovery from injuries. They even have fewer hangovers and less jet lag.
That’s some exciting stuff. It shows that we’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg in the possibilities for anti-aging solutions.
Within years, we may see the first generation of people who appear to be as young as their children. For the first time in history, the Fountain of Youth may soon become a reality.
