Modern Fall Hair Trends for Type 4

How to turn these trending styles into refined looks for you.

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being “blah” and 10 being “I love it,” how would you currently rate your experience with your hair?

We want you to be at a “10!” So with the help of the other Dressing Your Truth Experts, we are sharing four popular 2023 Fall/Winter hairstyle trends for your Type.

Hair is such an emotional experience for women, and you want to feel stunning every day. As a Type 4, it’s common for you to approach the world with an analytical, all-or-nothing tendency. You’re either going to totally embrace a hairstyle and love it, or not want anything to do with it at all!

This article will help you get the full picture of a trending hairstyle. You’ll be able to weigh the pros and cons of whether or not it will fit you. If you’re feeling “blah” about your hair lately, this article is going to change that! And, if you love your hair currently, keep this article handy for the time you’re ready to go “all in” with one of these popular hairstyles.

1. Bouncy Layers

This one is a throwback to the choppy 90s cut that was made so popular by Rachel on the hit TV show FRIENDS. We’re seeing an updated version with more blended layers. This cut is known as the butterfly cut with short layers by the face and longer layers throughout the back. This look also resembles the 90’s blowout, supermodel hairstyle. Think big Hollywood hair! It is a voluminous, bouncy style that can require more upkeep as you will want to use a blow dryer and curlers to create a full, bouncy look.

Does this hair trend favor Type 4?

Initially, you may think this style won’t work for Type 4s, because more layers create more movement in the hair and it can get too messy. To make this trend work for Type 4s, don’t add as many layers. Start the shortest layers right around your cheekbone and minimize the layers throughout. Keep them blended rather than choppy. Finish the style with a clean blunt line at the ends of the hair.

Rather than “bouncy,” think “voluminous.” Adding volume at the roots will help create a full-blown-out style while keeping the layers around your face clean.

To get that volume, this hairstyle will take more of a styling commitment, so watch this tutorial about how to properly blow dry your hair to get that height.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 4/1 – You will love the added volume of this style.
  • Type 4/2 – You’ll be really drawn to the softer movement of this style with the added blended layers.
  • Type 4/3 – You may opt for more texture (see the next trend).

What keywords are important to remember for this trend?

Clean, Polished

2. Textured Lob

A lob is a long bob. We’ve seen this style featured for several years now. This season, the classical clean-cut lob is getting more textured. It is close in style to the shag and mullet-inspired cuts that we have been seeing the last year or two. With this style, you have the choice to go really textured and layered or more blended and classic. The viral “wolf cut” made famous by Wednesday’s actor Jenna Ortega is a very edgy version of this classic cut.

This style adds movement and dimension with fewer layers than the bouncy layers above. This cut looks best worn with a bit of curl added either by letting your natural curl come out or by using a hot tool to add in some movement. It can be a low-maintenance style with a relaxed shaggy finish. The classic bob that hits right at chin length is also a really popular choice this fall.

Does this hair trend favor Type 4?

Yes and no. A lob takes the hair length to right around the shoulders. Hair at this length can create a fold and get messy on a Type 4.

So to make a lob work for your refined Type 4 energy, create a clean line by keeping the hair right above the shoulders or 2-3 inches past. This style can veer into a wild texture quickly, so avoid adding too many short layers right around the cheek and jawbone. Instead, add purposeful layers through the mid-shaft to the ends of the hair and through the back of the hair. This style looks nice with some added curl – either natural or added by hot tools.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 4/1 and 4/3 – You’ll love the added texture of this style and the variety of styling curly or straight.
  • Type 4/2 – If the layered texture feels like too much movement, another spin on this style would be an asymmetrical lob (see the 3rd image above of the blonde hairstyle).

What keywords are important to remember for this trend?

Refined, Purposeful

3. Bangs

We’ve seen bangs come and go over the decades, and this season they are making a comeback. (Not the big 80s dramatic bangs, thank goodness!) The bangs we’re seeing featured this season are longer in length.

There are many names for this longer style: “Birkin bangs,” curtain bangs, and curve cut bangs. Basically a softer, longer version of the blunt cut bang. Depending on your current hairstyle you can cater the length of your bangs to work for your face shape and preference.

Bangs work well with different hair lengths and textures, so this could be a fun way to try a new hairstyle with less commitment. Because this style of bang is longer you can pin them back or blend them into your hairstyle on days you don’t want to show the bangs.

Does this hair trend favor Type 4?

A traditional blunt-cut bang strongly favors the Type 4 movement. The softer bang we’re seeing this season can also be very flattering on Type 4s. Just remember to keep it stylized and sleek in how it falls around your face. Add a medium to thick amount of hair to the section you cut into a bang. If you don’t add enough, the lightness of the bang could be annoying to you and feel more like a short layer or flyaways.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 4/1 – You’ll want to cut the bang slightly shorter (right at your brows) and keep the bang section medium-weight.
  • Type 4/2 – A longer bang swept to the side would create a lovely smooth movement.
  • Type 4/3 – A side-swept bang would look nice creating some sleek texture across the face.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend?

Stylized, sleek

4. Side Part

The middle part has taken women by storm for several years, but now we’re seeing the side part come back! This is great news for all 4 Types since the middle part is very severe and is reserved for Type 4s. In 2023, the side part is deeper and more intentional.

Does this hair trend favor Type 4?

Lucky for you as a Type 4, you can do either middle or side parts and always look stunning. Get into this trend by going bolder with the side part than you have before. A sleek pony with a defined side part is also on trend and would be fabulous on you.

Any secondary Type considerations?

  • Type 4/1 – Adding a deeper side part will create some upward movement and volume at the roots.
  • Type 4/2 – A side part will add some softness to your style.
  • Type 4/3 – Go deeper! Create a dramatic look by pinning back the hair on the not-parted side.

What keywords are important to remember for this trend?

Striking, Bold

There you have it—the very best of the Fall/Winter hair trends for Type 4. Which of these stunning styles will you be trying?
