  1. Perhaps typical of T4, I went shorter than short in the early months of my DYT journey. I kept the short hair a little over a year. Then began growing it to a roughly chin/jawline angled bob. I’ve always kept my natural greying hair. The turning point came during the grow out phase when I changed my part. Something clicked and I’ve had I love my hair day every day. The biggest thing I’ve learned is to work with my hair and to refine it as part of expressing my truth. Thank you ladies for sharing your hair journeys.

  2. I have long natural red hair and always get compliments on my hair. I have thought that must be the only thing pretty about me. I have only had my hair short once and it took me too long to style my hair, so I grew it back out.

  3. Up til really recently, I had been keeping my hair super long–like waist length long, with not very many layers to give movement or softness. Usually it was the hair that was getting compliments–I felt like I was just “the girl with the really long hair”. I cut it for the first time in years a few months ago, a few inches below the collarbone, and I feel like you can see my features and it’s not just “all about the hair”. A shorter length is also more versatile, and I can wear a bun or ponytail without it being super heavy. I can now use hair products, and they are effective–whereas with insanely long hair, it’s hard for me to get product to work.

Another thing that helped me was switching to a slightly more “upscale” hair dresser. I used to just get a discount cut at the mall, and they don’t spend a lot of time with you, and I never felt like I got a cut I loved. My current hair stylist takes her time with my hair and for the first time, I feel like I get a personalized experience. I have very thick, quite straight hair that needs a lot of time cutting the layers for them to show–no stylist *ever* told me that until I switched to a different stylist! I really love my hair now, and I’ve had good hair days every since I made the change 🙂

    1. Hi Andrea, thank you for sharing your stylist experience. Such a valuable point you’ve shared to switch to the next level (or two) of hair dresser. It must make it easier to create a relationship with your stylist as well.

  4. I was identified by my hair at one time as well. I”m still identified by my hair but I control the outcome of my hair, not my hair controlling the outcome of me.

  5. I can relate nearly 100% with Kalista. I used to have straight hair, but the hormonal changes since hitting my 40’s have brought out unexpected curls. While the curls can be nice when they are cooperating, often they feel like a frizzy mess for my type 4 energy, just as Kalista also mentioned as her experience. I have considered having my hair professionally straightened as well, and after seeing Kalista’s hair ( it looks wonderful!), I will consider mentioning it to my stylist during my next appointment. Thanks for the video!

  6. Yay for DYT! I don’t even want to think what I’d look like now in my 40’s without it. Every day can be a great hair, clothing and makeup day!

  7. I recently cut off several inches of curly locks of hair! It’s been freeing and a much needed change. I love DYT and how it helps empower me to know what is correct for me when it comes to my own personal style!
