Can Talking to Your Hair REALLY Make a Difference? Hair Talk with Nicole

The way you feel about your hair is important.

And sometimes, it just needs a little extra love to look the way you want!

In this episode of Hair Talk, Expert Stylist Nicole gives you tons of resources to have a happy hair day—every day. She’ll cover products, practices, vocabulary to take to your next hair appointment, and Type-specific answers to your questions.

Here’s just a taste of the questions our community asked:

  • I’m going through menopause and noticing changes to my hair. What’s the best way to deal with these changes?
  • My hair is thinning in certain areas. How do I encourage it to grow again?
  • I’m a Type 2 with a lot of gray hair. How can I color my hair so it blends?
  • How do I get my hair to hold its natural curl?
  • What are ways to get my fine, straight, and thin hair to have a dynamic, Type 3 look?
  • How do I find a stylist that doesn’t make me look like a little old lady?
  • Perms—there are two kinds! Which one is best for my hair?
  • I’m a Type 4 and love parting my hair down the center—how do I get more movement and a less severe look?
  • And a fun tip that everyone with short hair will appreciate: how to grow out your short hair without getting a mullet!

Nicole talks about how stress, thyroid, and hormonal imbalances play a role in unhappy hair. And if you’ve never thought that talking to your hair could really make a difference, her client’s story just might change your mind.

  1. This was great a great talk Nicole! I am going to try the Surface Awaken products. Thank you so much for sharing this!

  2. Thank you for this great talk! I’m 48, type 4/1, and my hair has actually gotten thick and curly (3A curls) since entering the peri- menopause phase, which is very odd for me because it was always quite straight before. I am at a loss for how to style it. I did watch Ann’s curly hair videos for how to care for it, and those were also great. After watching this talk, I am considering asking my stylist to add layers. I do try to straighten it at times, so I didn’t want layers, but it usually just looks like a fuzzball by the end of the day, as the curl tries to make itself known in spite of my straightening efforts. Also, for women who are dealing with thinning hair, in addition to consulting their personal healthcare practitioner and maintaining a healthy diet, I recommend supporting both the adrenals and the thyroid ( kelp for thyroid and adaptogenic herbs, such as eluthero and ashwaganda, for both adrenals and thyroid support). Thanks again for the informative talk!

  3. Another suggestion for hair shafts getting thinner with menopause — add collagen to your diet. Drink lots of homemade bone broth, and add gelatin to your diet. Hydrolyzed collagen dissolves in hot or cold liquid. I drink it daily in smoothies, and in coffee. Makes a huge difference in my hair and my nails!

  4. Nicole… you are beyond Amazing.. I was looking for some more insights.. for my hair.. and Vooola.. There you are.. or here.. Thank you.. you are Sooo Amazing.. in how you.. Explain.. in what to do…! Detailed 🙂

  5. Following The Curly Girl Handbook has been very supportive to me and has coaxed more curl from my hair than I ever knew I had! My hair is in much better condition because of it. I highly recommend diving into the CG (Curly Girl) world for all wavies and curlies!

  6. Thanks for the scrunchy curl tips! As a T1 I kept my hair super short just because I wanted a pretty much wash and wear…low maintenance. I knew I might have some wave but I usually just wore my hair straight when longer. So, now that my hair is now a bit longer I followed your suggestion with curling gel and voila! Curls!! I think I’ll try the curling cream next as my hair is a bit fine and thin but bam!! Low maintenance and beautiful light golden brown curls!!

  7. Nicole…you are such a bright light in my life!! So sorry to have missed seeing you on my last visit to Utah. Here’s a picture of my happy hair day. I finally took the time to play with it. It didn’t take all that long and I can see some waves. Even cleaned out some bathroom drawers and neatly put together all my hair accessories 🙂 Thank you for being you!! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d003062a22090059d6288a2548fb0b572ec69fbf3932b381d83c883d3d0ecc9e.jpg
