Your time is valuable.
And you probably want to spend it doing more of what you love. Also, if you’re just ready for more options with your medium to long-length hair, this is for you.
Skipping out on washing your hair every day creates less work for you. Plus, it helps balance the scalp in its oil production because shampoo strips the hair and scalp of all natural oils. Thus, the scalp will actually start to produce more oil because it thinks all the oils will be stripped within the next 24 hours. It seems counter-intuitive but if you can go 2-3 days in between shampoos, this regulates and balances the scalp and over time, the scalp produces less oil.
Bonus! When the hair is a little dirty on second -day, it’s easier to work with because of the leftover product from the previous day. Many women prefer second-day hair!
As you’re transitioning from washing every day, here’s what to expect:
1. You’ll initially experience a lot of oil, which makes the hair flat.
This is because the scalp is accustomed to producing so much oil already. The first two weeks will be the most challenging as it takes two weeks for the scalp to reset and adjust to the new normal. Consider remaining open to the process until you try washing every other day for at least 2 weeks consecutively. To manage the oily texture of your hair, try these solutions:
Solution #1: Use a dry-shampoo.
Dry shampoo is a light powder that you spray at the roots which soaks up sweat and oil and helps the hair hold volume for one more day of wear. Spray it directly at the roots, where the hair feels flat and oily. This isn’t a permanent substitute for shampoo, but it’s a great option for this transition period.
Solution #2: Look into using a cleansing conditioner instead of shampoo.
Cleansing conditioner combines the purpose of a shampoo and a conditioner into one. It’s less harsh on the hair and scalp. A cleansing conditioner leaves the hair free of debris and build-up without stripping the hair of natural oils.
Solution #3: Evaluate the rest of the products you are using.
It’s possible that the amount and type of product you’re using is adding to the heaviness and dirtiness of the hair. It’s also possible that the type of product you are using isn’t quite right for your hair texture. For example, if you have fine textured hair, be careful not to use too heavy of a pomade or hairspray. Be conscious of the amount you’re using on second-day hair.
The styling process for second and third-day hair will look different than the first day.
This is where it can get really fun!
Solution #1: Try new styles.
The hair will act differently on these subsequent days so you’ll want to be open to experimenting with new ways of styling your hair. Some ideas: Pin back your bangs, braid your hair, pull your hair up or use a headband.
