So, using the 5 Elements of Style, I’m going to show you how to zip through your shopping experience and land on your perfect Type 3 boots in record time.
Ready, Set, Go!
1. Look for the right color
First, look for color and go from there because it helps you to move quickly when you focus on color first.
You’re looking for your gorgeous Type 3 shades–even when it comes to footwear! Use your Style Guide to find colors that are totally Type 3.
Keep your eyes open for colors that are warm, rich, or have a dirty look. You want depth.
There are a lot of brown boots out there, so look for the ones with a red, gold, or warm undertone. I recommend starting out with one or two pairs of neutral boots that go with everything.
Warm dark brown, cognac, or tan are great options for a Type 3 neutral.
You can wear colored boots too! Look for colors like maroon, animal print, or hunter green. These can bring more of an interesting quality to your look and surprisingly can go with a lot of clothes.
Remember your outfits don’t have to be matchy-matchy, so a splash of color at the feet can be a great look for you.
And let’s not forget that red is the color of the season!
2. Consider texture
The second thing to look for is texture. It’s what makes your boots interesting.
Remember Type 3 energy is substantial, so embellishments that reflect your substantial nature are perfect for you.
Examples would be boots with buckles, studs, embroidery, top stitching, or two-tone leather. Another great way to bring in your Type 3 energy is to use animal skins of all varieties, as they perfectly add texture and interest.
3. Choose a design line
Third, look at the shape of the boot.
Look for our Type 3 triangular shapes. Not every shoe needs to have a pointed toe, but you can choose this option if you like it. You can also do square, rectangular, a more narrow rounded toe, or snip toe.
You can go with a bootie, mid-calf, or knee-high. It is up to your preferences! Every boot wardrobe needs a great staple tall boot, in my opinion!
Also, consider the heel height. This is based on your comfort level and personal preference. If you’re interested, check out this guide to boots for every shape of body as it discusses heels and body shapes.
Need a dressier option? How about these peacock blue boots with a kitten heel?
My opinion is that Type 3’s look hot in a little bit of heel. It brings the energy up a notch!
I prefer a 2-3 inch heel. Any more than that and I can’t move as swiftly, so it’s a deal-breaker for me.
Heels can lengthen your legs too, which is a bonus!
4. Incorporate fabrication and pattern
The last step to finding your perfect boots is adding in Type 3 pattern and fabrication!
Stay away from materials that are slouchy in fabrication, soft skins, furs, felts, big bows, cutesy embellishments. Gathered leather can create texture but gathered soft-skinned material can look too soft for a Type 3.
Now you might say “But Carol, I love my UGG boots!”
I hear you! While traditional UGG design lines are not really Type 3, you can still get some added texture by going for an animal print pattern or a crochet texture. That way you are still getting some Type 3 elements.
Also, stay away from super sleek boots. Obviously, for functional purposes, you might have a boot that is smooth in texture, like a galosh. In this case, I would try to find one with a textured pattern to show your edgy nature.
How I wear my two favorite pairs of boots with everything
I personally like having two pairs of neutral boots. One in a dark warm brown, and the other in cognac.
I feel like these two options will give me a pair of boots that will go with any outfit.
My brown booties have a buckle embellishment and my red Chelsea boots have a chunky sole that looks great with my wide-leg jeans.
With red being a popular Fall/Winter color, sometimes I won’t have any red in my outfit except for my boots and maybe a necklace or bracelet to tie it all together. So awesome.
As you apply these simple steps you will “step” into the right boots every time. Trust yourself and your ability to choose the correct thing with the 5 elements being your guide.
