Orderly makeup storage is so important!
There’s no way I could just throw it all into a drawer and dig around to find what I wanted.
Ugh, can you even imagine?
My storage system needs to serve many purposes.
It needs to have compartments for each category, hold all my makeup and tools, and be portable enough that I can easily take it to work with me.
Plus, it has to be clear so I can see what’s in there.
Here’s how I stay organized and orderly with my makeup:
For a gift on my 18th birthday, a friend gave me a makeup bag.
It was my first real, dedicated makeup bag. It was smaller and I didn’t have a lot of makeup at the time, so it was perfect for me. I remember it was burgundy-colored satin on the outside and the inside was clear vinyl with pockets for everything. I loved it!
I used it for over 10 years before it finally gave out. By this time, I was full-on dressing my truth so I had collected quite a bit more makeup. I needed a bigger bag. I found two of them that meet my needs!
- I found a new larger bag that holds my full collection of makeup in neatly-divided sections. Honestly, I have a lot—my collection includes everything that is carried in the DYT store, plus some older favorites.
- In addition to this, I have a smaller, single compartment bag that holds a selection of go-to products that I use on days when I need to keep it simple and quick. This is usually the bag I take when I travel, so I put colors in there that will match my outfits for the trip.
For this post, I’ll share what I keep in my smaller go-to bag.
Makeup Essentials Every Type 4 Needs:
1. Makeup Bag
I like a simple, one-pocket approach for this bag. I take the products out of the bag as I use them in order, then place them on the counter. Once I’m done, I scoop them all up and back in the bag they go.
2. Type 4 Makeup Starter Kit
This set of makeup matches nearly anything I wear and includes my favorite eyeliner and mascara. If you’re just getting started with DYT and/or you just discovered you’re a Type 4, make your makeup process simple with this kit.
3. Makeup Brush Starter Kit
Quality makeup brushes are the key to a fabulous face! These are my must-haves, plus a few more that I will also list.
4. Eye Primer
Before I even think about eyeshadow, I apply primer. With this, my colors stay truer and in place all day.
5. 103 – BB Creme
This is my everyday foundation choice. I do regularly use the full-coverage Studio Blend, but the BB Creme cuts out steps because it includes moisturizer, foundation, and sunscreen.
6. Type 4 Blush – Miami
For me, orange is a neutral. I find that can wear it with most color combinations. If I had to pick one blush, this would be it.
7. Grapefruit – Lip Balm
I like that this has enough pigment to show up as an orange, but it’s sheer enough that I can get away without a liner if I’m in a hurry. (If my current wardrobe includes a lot of pinks, I’ll switch this one out for Bougainvillea – Lip Creme.)
8. Hibiscus – Eyeshadow
This coral color is my most used eyeshadow. It’s great as a stand-alone to add a little color to a minimal makeup look, and also looks great combined with the colors in the Makeup Brush Starter Kit.
9. Eyelash Primer
I LOVE big full lashes, and this is my secret! A single coat before mascara gives you eye-batting perfect lashes.
10. Eyelash Definer
As I said, I’m all about eyelashes. This separates my lashes for a longer, fuller look. It also removes any clumps for a more refined finish.
11. Brush on Brow – Taupe
As you know, I always, always, always fill in my brows. One of these will last you for years, so it’s well worth the purchase.
12. Brow Brush
This is my one-and-done brush for perfect brows.
13. Bent Eyeliner Brush
This brush is an absolute must-have for me. I powder-set my eyeliner with a matching eyeshadow, and this fine brush allows me to get into the lash line.
14. Buffer Foundation Brush
I never knew what I was missing until this luxury brush came into my life. She’s a keeper. It allows me to seamlessly blend my foundation without any streaks or blotches.
15. 103 – Concealing Creme
This single product has such a great pay-out. It brightens tired eyes and covers the little red veins around my nostrils.
Now, I’d love to hear from you.
