Trends come and go. Sometimes they work for our Type 4 style, and sometimes they’re a hard pass.
But this fall, it’s as if it’s all for us!
We are seeing dark denim, tailored lines, bold patterns, and statement jewelry.
Take your pick, they all work!
I’m Kalista, your Type 4 Expert. I’ve compiled a list of the best wearable fashion trends for fall 2023, with picture examples. What will you try this season?
A quick note: while some trends naturally lean toward a specific Type or a secondary Type, every Type can make them work.
That’s what we’ll be doing here. You’ll see photos of trends from the fashion world, and I’ll tell you what to do to make them fit perfectly for Type 4. (Want any of the items you see? Just click on the photo to shop for it.)
Then, you’ll be able to take this information and create an outfit for yourself using what you learned.
Think of this article as guidance, and then you get to go and be the expression.
So let’s go over the new trends and discuss how to make them work for our Type 4 nature.
1. Dark-Wash, Wide-Leg Denim
This season we’re seeing jeans with a more loose-fitted style through the legs, and different cuts including wide leg, boyfriend, flare, and split hem. The waistline is in flux as lower-rise styles are trying to make a comeback, but we’re seeing women stick with the mid to high-rise as it’s more flattering and comfortable to wear. Dark-wash and black rinse jeans are trending. Denim on denim is also popular this season, such as pairing a denim top with jeans.

Dark wash denim? Is there any other kind? Deep-dark denim is perfect for Type 4. We also look amazing in bold-colored jeans—think red, pink, and royal blue. The black denim also works for us, obviously. Just make sure it’s not faded black, but a true deep black. You know the difference!
Many cuts are trending right now, but the cuts that work best for Type 4 are straight and wide leg. These cuts create parallel lines, especially when finished with a crease down the leg.
Any secondary Type considerations?
- 4/1 – Try cropped, wide-leg pants to bring the movement up.
- 4/2 – You will love the added flow in the design line of the flared denim.
- 4/3 – Try dramatic, flare-style jeans to create a bold statement.
What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Saturated, Clean
2. A Tailored Look
Trousers, blazers, and even vests are becoming popular again. This 80s-inspired trend even has shoulder pads and pleated trousers. This look doesn’t have to be reserved for office wear as you’ll see it dressed up or down, depending on your occasion. Make it casual by pairing trousers and a blazer with a t-shirt and sneakers, or wear it more classically with a blouse and loafers. Choosing a blazer that is slightly oversized is popular.
Does this trend work for Type 4?
The tailored suiting trend lends perfectly to the structured Type 4 design lines and fabrication. This look is by nature dressy, and by adding a blazer to a more casual outfit you instantly elevate the whole look. The trend calls for a more oversized fit, but we can be our own authority on this a bring in the fit as we choose.
Any secondary Type considerations?
- 4/1 – If this feels too structured, try a fitted cardigan with trousers to accomplish the same tailored look.
- 4/2 – Choose a soft knit blazer.
- 4/3 – Choose a blazer with more prominent angles in the lapel.
What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Structured, Stylized
3. Cargo Pants
We’ve moved back to the 90s with this trend, but rather than seeing them in a camo print like we used to, this season you’ll see more neutral colors. In some styles, the pocket has dropped from high-thigh to just above the knee, which can be a more flattering choice as to not add bulk to your thighs. You’ll see many styles in a wide leg. This trend crosses over into athleisure wear. But keep in mind, cargo shorts are still out!
Does this trend work for Type 4?
Surprisingly, we are seeing cargo styles in tailored and more structured styles, not just the slouchy cuts we typically saw in past iterations of this trend. Opt for pleated pockets and structured fabrics. Colors can be black or any of our bold hues.
Any secondary Type considerations?
- 4/1 – You will enjoy the added animation created by the pockets
- 4/2 – Choose a utility pant that features an outline of a pocket rather than added bulk
- 4/3 – You will like the added texture of the dynamic pocket
What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Clean, Still
4. Oversized Sweater
Oversized everything has been a big trend for the last few years, and as we head into the cooler months you’ll see oversized sweaters with a twist. The balloon sleeve (wide through the arms and tapers at the wrist) is trending this season. The oversized sweater with leggings and boots is a great look this fall.
Does this trend work for Type 4?
Although “oversized” isn’t a Type 4 look, this look can be adapted to a bold statement, rather than ill-fitting. Look for straight lines, and wide cuffs and hems.
Any secondary Type considerations?
- 4/1 – Keep the fabrication light so it doesn’t weigh you down
- 4/2 – This look is most suited for you. Wear it well with fitted leggings, slim jeans, or a pencil skirt
- 4/3 – Try an oversized layer like a denim jacket to achieve this same feel without feeling like you’re drowning

5. Long, Oversized Coats
Overall, we’re looking at longer lengths and oversized! Think 80’s trench coat: double-breasted, big shoulders. Textured coats like fuzzy shearling and teddy coats are still going strong.
Does this trend work for Type 4?
Bold trench coasts and double-breasted styles are a classic go-to for Type 4 style. But watch it on the fuzzy textures, and keep them to trimmings rather than a whole coat in this fabrication.
Any secondary Type considerations?
- 4/1 – A long puffy coat would be another great option for you this season
- 4/2 – Keep it cozy by adding in some soft fabrication along with structure.
- 4/3 – You can enjoy the heaviest weighted fabrics in coats, double-breasted, and large collars comfortably
What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Simple, Structured
6. Bold, Playful Patterns and the Color Red
Bold and Playful would be two words that sum up what we’re seeing in the pattern and color trends this fall/winter. Popular patterns include colorful prints, polka dots, and hearts. Even the classic stripes have become thicker and more colorful.
Red is always a popular color in the fall, but this season you’ll see more bright, light reds taking center stage. (So be sure to check out what makes a Type 4 Red here!)
Another popular nod to the 80’s is color blocking with light and dark tones of the same color.
Does this trend work for Type 4?
Bold patterns? Yes, please! The thick stripes, color blocking, and large-scale florals of this season match the bold-statement factor of Type 4 movement. Be mindful not to include too many colors in the patterns, stick to 2-4 to keep the movement steady.
Any secondary Type considerations?
- 4/1 – Try animated shapes like bold polka dots, hearts, and stars
- 4/2 – Try bold patterns that create ovals and s-curves, bold print florals
- 4/3 – Bring in some edge with angles and swift lines in the bold patterns
What keywords are important to remember for this trend? Bold, Striking
7. Statement Jewelry
Pick your piece! Will it be a statement earring, necklace, or bracelet? The statement can be the size, color, or design. Metal pieces are popular right now, and pearls are taking center stage as well. Keep in mind if you’re clothing is stronger in pattern and color, keep the jewelry minimal. For minimal jewelry, small hoops and dainty chains are trending.

Keeping it simple and bold is what Type 4 style does best. Whether it’s a single bold piece, or a simple coordinated collection, our Type 4 style fits right in with the season’s jewelry trends. When selecting pearls, look for clean whites rather than the typical ivory-colored pearls.

Any secondary Type considerations?
- 4/1 – Pearls are a great option for you. Try adding some more color to your jewelry.
- 4/2 – Rather than doing large sizes with bolder colors in your jewelry, choose all-silver larger pieces, or bolder-color, smaller-sized pieces.
- 4/3 – This trend is right up your alley! Go big, go bold!
