The number one concern I get from my clients is, “How do I get more volume in my hair?” And I say, “Don’t worry about it, girlfriend.I got your back.Let me teach you the ways.” First thing is root lifter. You’ll love this product. It’s for all hair types, and it’s a light texture that sprays in at your roots when the hair is wet.

Spray it in right through the root area and maybe about four or five strips across the top of the head. That’s going to allow your hair to bounce up away from your head as it dries. This is heat activated, and so you’ll want to blow-dry right after. And then it stays in the hair and really works well for like three to four days until you’re ready to wash again and then style the first day with your root lifter and don’t have to worry about it after that.

Fantastic. Number two is that you’re going to blow-dry upside down. You’re going to flip your head over and blow-dry, and this is going to allow your hair to dry up and away from your head. So even if you take a comb or a brush and brush your hair back and forth as you’re blow-drying, that’s going to help too, but just flip the head over and blow-dry upside down.

Third is to backcomb. Grab your comb, take up a section of hair, and after you’ve blow-dried the hair, just backcomb the bottom little fourth-inch at the roots. If you want more details on this, reference my backcombing tutorial entitled “Flat Hair, No More: How to Backcomb.”

The link is in the copy. Isn’t this great? It’s easy as one-two-three. Root Boost, blow-dry upside down, and backcomb. I love this product. I use it on everybody, whether it’s curly or straight, happy or sad hair, blond or red, long or short, I use it on everybody. And I know you’re going to love it.

Grab your purse and buy your Root Boost today. You’re going to love it. Because today is going to be your happy hair day. See you.

  1. Hi! I find your tips very practical and easy to follow. Do you also have tips for shorter hair? Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Alex! Most all the instruction I give can be used for all lengths of hair:) But, I will be sure to give short hair some attention as I create hair content in the future:) Thanks for the feedback!

  2. I love the hair styles and tips on Dressing Your Truth but I despise putting chemicals on my scalp. It doesn’t intuitively feel like the best healthy choice. I am on the lookout for natural products, if there are any. Thanks for your good work!

  3. Hi Nicole! After your video about cleansing conditioner, I decided to try it out. However, I often find that whenever I use cleansing conditioner alone (without shampoo first) and rub it into my scalp, it weighs my hair down (making achieving volume very hard) and makes my roots *greasy* instead of cleaning the hair. Can you give me any tips or suggestions of what I can do? Or is cleansing conditioner not for my hair type? I have medium to thin, wavy, shoulder-length hair that I like to blow or iron straight. Thank you very much!

    1. Yes, I do have some tips:) Thanks for asking! Two things: first it might be that you’re not using quite enough of the product to cleanse all the dirt and oil. Be sure that the scalp feels like you can really move the product around everywhere. You might need to add a titch bit of water to start to emulsify the product through. Then start to work the product down through the strands of hair. Then, be sure to rinse and rinse and rinse. Many people don’t rinse out the product all the way. 1)use enough product to get the product everywhere and really work into the roots, just like you would with a shampoo. 2) rinse, rinse, rinse. If these tips don’t work, it might be that your texture doesn’t like the particular mix of cleansing conditioner. I would try another cleansing conditioner, because they are all very different formulas. You can find more options at wal-mart or on-line if needed:) Hope this is helpful!

      1. Thanks so much! That was super helpful, and it worked! Another question – I’m still having problems with frizz whether I blow straight or try to get it dry curly. I read the post on frizz, but do you have any more tips? Products that might help me attain “perfect”, sleek, polished, “every hair in place” Type 4 hair? Thanks a ton!

  4. Hi Nicole! I know this is an older post, but I am just getting to it now 😉 Your hair has a nice, casual wave to it. Do you style it that way, or does it have some natural curl? Mine is fine and thin and straight but I would like to get that natural wave look.

    1. Hi Amy! My hair does have a natural wave to it. I believe in this video, I had combed out my wave and then touched it up with random flat iron curls. You can also get a nice natural-wave look by wrapping the hair around a 1 inch curling iron. I made a tutorial about this entitled, “These 4 Hot Tools Create 4 Different Kinds of Waves.” You can also use the Versatile Styling Cream as a foundation before styling the hair with some wave. This will be supportive to your fine texture:) It’s going to be awesome!
