I’m often asked, “What do you do for family pictures when you want everyone to dress their truth?”
This is a great question. It can be stressful planning a family photo session, especially when you have a large number of people to coordinate!
Your photos become memories that your family will treasure for generations. And when everyone is dressing their truth, these pictures turn out so much better and are surprisingly simple to plan for.
Here are four practical tips you can use to make your next family photo session the best one yet:
1. Consider your home decor.
If you’re going to display the photos around your home, consider the colors and style of your home decor. You can use fabric swatches from the furniture and/or window treatments and choose a color in them for each Type to wear. If you have extended family or older children participating, send the swatches to them so that everyone can coordinate their own outfits according to those colors.
2. Solids or patterns—or both?
It’s best to pick one or two main colors that each Type can work with. But that doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Throw in some more color to loosen it up a bit. Then, depending on how many people are in the photo, have about 1/3 of the group dress in patterns to add interest. Too many patterns can make the photo too busy.
3. How to prevent color-clashing.
You want everyone to look and feel great individually, and you also want the group as a whole to look incredible. How do you prevent colors from clashing? For example, it could look disharmonious if a Type 4 wore black while standing next to a Type 1 with much more light and bright colors. Consider picking a cohesive color pallet that works across all Types, such as a Type 4 wearing navy instead of black.
4. Have fun!
If you’re not much of a planner and like to be spontaneous, consider the option of arranging a last-minute photo shoot with minimal guidelines: “Tomorrow let’s take a family photo! Wear red, green, or blue.” See what everyone has chosen to wear when they show up. Now that’s one way to create a great memory!
When your family members know their Energy Types and dress their truth, it not only creates more understanding and harmony in your relationships, but it also gives you the tools you need so that every person feels honored and looks great—from their hair down to their toes!
