It’s always fun to get to know the people you admire on a more personal level, so we wanted you to have that opportunity with our Type 1 Experts! Jaleah and Marcy had fun answering these questions, and we know you’ll enjoy reading them!
1. What’s your middle name? Any reason why that name was chosen for you?
- Jaleah: My middle name is Larraine. Why was it chosen? That is such a good question. I know how my first name came about, but I have no clue about my middle… I have an Aunt Larraine, maybe after her?!
- Marcy: Ann. I don’t know why this name was chosen, but I wrote about poem about it. (Included at the end of this post.)
2. What’s your favorite pie flavor?
- Jaleah: My favorite pie flavor is probably Cherry O’Cream Cheese pie. It has a graham cracker crust, filled with a cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk middle, and topped with cherry pie filling. It is pretty dang delicious.
- Marcy: Lemon or pumpkin. In general, though, I don’t love pies!
3. What’s the last song you listened to? Why that song? Is that the type of music you like?
- Jaleah: Let me check my Spotify…okay, I’m back! The last song I listened to is “Impossible” by James Arthur. I like pop music, and I like discovering new songs, so Spotify mixes are my usual go-to for music!
- Marcy: “Flying Home” – the theme from the movie Scully. I love the lyrics (“Tell me your story and I’ll tell you mine…”) which I noticed during the end credits and stayed in my seat long enough to hear most of the song. I often choose favorite songs based on the lyrics, and I like all different genres, except jazz! It moves just a little too slow and repetitive for my Type 1 nature! I can only handle the twang in country music for a little while before I tune it out and change stations – but they have some of the best lyrics. In general, I guess I just like plain old-fashioned, light pop!
4. What’s something you do that might seem out-of-the-ordinary for your Type?
- Jaleah: I work in a dark office. I love the dark, my eyes are the most happy in darkness. And I am quite un-social. I have gotten better, but if there was some social event that I didn’t want to do, I’d make up a lie for not being there. EEK! Lies sometimes feel friendlier! I have gotten better at just saying I don’t want to go. But I’ve had to learn how to do that.
- Marcy: I do things alone. It honestly doesn’t even occur to me most of the time that maybe I could ask someone to go to the store with me or shopping.
5. If you could go back and tell your 13 year-old self a piece of advice, what would you tell her?
- Jaleah: Wear color!!! Don’t be afraid of it. You think you stand out too much already, but don’t dim your glow for other people. They’re not worth it!
- Marcy: That her 13th year is going to be the very best year of her life (so far!). I would be much more conscious of the importance of setting positive intentions.
6. What’s your favorite holiday-themed movie?
- Jaleah: Ooo… I don’t love movies. It’s funny, I can sit down and watch TV for like 4 hours straight, but I hate sitting down to watch movies. I guess I like the changing story lines in TV shows better because they capture my attention. But if I HAD to pick one holiday movie…I’d say Elf!
- Marcy: I guess Elf – still makes me laugh!

My parents named me Marian Ann.
I truly don’t know why.
Perhaps they thought of Robin Hood
Maid Marian in lore is good.
Or Mary Ann, my grandma great
Could be the mystery namesake.
I’m told a boy they thought I’d be
So Joey was the name for me
And when I came as pink, not blue
They finally got it down to two.
Marian or Marcia
With “Marcy” nicknamed in.
Apparently they didn’t see
The Marian Ann redundancy
So Marian the winner was
And thus began a trial that ‘twas
The bane of all my early years
When teasing triggered frequent tears.
As boys named this rosarian
Just Marian the Librarian
I never liked my name and so
One day I simply changed it.
We’d sold our house and moved away
To sunny Californ-i-a
Where on day one of middle school
I learned a brand new naming rule.
My teacher said: Please write your name
And if your nickname’s not the same
Just in the corner print it clear
The name to call you all this year.
Smiling, I printed carefully
My brand new “Marcy” name.
Near three score years have passed since I
Changed names and still I don’t know why
I can’t decide what name will be
On poems or programs done by me
Or even on my tombstone slate
Which name will have eternal fate?
Marian Marcy May-be Brown?
I think at last it all comes down
To just MM
They could have named me Daisy.
