Contemplating plastic surgery or botox? Here’s some great news: You don’t need expensive facial procedures to look younger and more vibrant.
When you shine from the inside, it shows on your beautiful face. So go facelift-free with these helpful tips for looking and feeling naturally youthful from the inside out.
Mirror, Mirror, Say It Ain’t So
There’s nothing wrong with aging naturally and gracefully. But there are certain signs of aging we don’t necessarily enjoy when we see them up-close in the mirror, like fine lines, sagging skin, wrinkles, brown spots and age spots.
Over time, sun damage and the effects of aging combine to change the color and texture of our skin. There are also deeper changes that occur at the cellular level.
The epidermis, or outer skin, becomes thin and more fragile. The subcutaneous layer, deeper inside the body, also becomes thinner and causes our bodies to have less insulation and padding. Collagen production and skin elasticity are reduced, especially in areas that have been exposed to the sun.
We see the effect of all of this right in our own faces. Our cheeks and necks begin to sag a bit. The bags under our eyes look more prominent. Smile lines deepen. Age spots pop up, seemingly overnight.
These changes are a natural and beautiful part of growing older. But it can take some time to adjust to your changing face and learn to embrace the side effects of the aging process.
Ways Our Skin Shows the Ravages of Time
Our skin experiences two types of aging: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging is the natural, biological process that occurs over time. It’s what makes our skin drier, less plump, more susceptible to UV damage, and more prone to sun spots and wrinkles.
Extrinsic aging involves environmental factors that influence the way we age. It results in tissue damage from contaminants, UV radiation, chemical exposure, and other things in our world. We can limit the damage from some of these things, but others are far less within our control.
Free radicals contribute to extrinsic skin aging. They are all around us, in our air, water, soil, and homes. All living organisms need free radicals, but these molecules also cause skin damage when they come in the form of pollution, smoke, sunlight, harmful chemicals, and certain foods we eat.
Good news: There are some simple ways we can combat the elements and prevent premature aging. Here are some things you can do to limit your exposure to free radicals and keep your body youthful:
- Decrease your sugar intake
- Eat more fruits and leafy green vegetables
- Increase your intake of foods with antioxidants, like berries, citrus, prunes, and olives
- Make it a priority to get enough sleep
- Avoid chemicals like pesticides and industrial solvents
- Don’t smoke cigarettes
- Be vigilant about using sunscreen
- Last but not least: stay consistent with your daily skincare routine
I spent 10 years researching and learning how to restore my skin’s health. During those years, I personally used dozens of different products and spent thousands of dollars to find what works. (And what really doesn’t!)
It’s been worth all the time and money because now—at age 63—I have remarkably healthy skin.
And the best outcome of all my research is that now I can help YOU.
I’m thrilled to share with you my anti-aging product line.
These products are essential in my personal skin-health regimen and I use them every day. I am so excited to help you simplify your skincare routine and get powerful results from the most essential ingredients your skin needs.
I especially love the Wrinkle Recovery Serum and the Neck Restoring Cream. Both of these products include retinol, which is vital when it comes to restoring your skin’s health.
As we age, it’a also highly recommended that we use a vitamin c serum for skin tightening. The Skin Brightening Serum will be your #1 go-to for this.
Facial exercises may reduce crow’s feet – the wrinkles that deepen over time around your eyes. These exercises fight facial laxity, which gives the impression of age. They decrease the dark circles below the eyes, lift the eyelids, and support strength in the lower face.
As an example, try this facial exercise technique that targets crow’s feet:
- Look up and start flickering just your upper eyelids for 30 seconds.
- Then stop and shut your eyes momentarily before repeating.
Body-wide exercise also has a rejuvenating effect. In addition to its positive psychological benefits, exercise has been found to naturally boost your human growth hormone (HGH) and keep your muscles and skin looking more youthful.
Exercise infuses your body with fresh oxygen and draws it through the body’s systems. Even when you feel lethargic, a quick burst of exercise can provide renewed energy and stamina for hours afterward. Plus, exercise is free and doesn’t cost thousands of dollars to keep you looking young.
Botox and Other Temporary Fixes
Did you know botox can only provide a temporary fix for wrinkles? These injections, which clench facial muscles and limit movement, resulting in fewer wrinkles for a period of three to six months. It takes about seven days after the injections to see their results.
Botox is actually one of an array of wrinkle-reducing injections. Other commonly-used injections include Dysport and Xeomin. While these treatments are sometimes partially covered by insurance, you’ll likely pay a hefty fee out of pocket.
Laser treatments and chemical peels are also popular skin fixes. They target the top layers of the skin, smoothing fine lines and eliminating rough patches. However, these treatments don’t address the deeper issues within the skin.
Another common method of fighting the signs of aging is through cosmetic fillers, which are inserted into the skin to fill wrinkles and sagging. Collagen is the oldest and best-known cosmetic filler. For decades, people have been using it to plump up aging skin.
Newer cosmetic filler options include hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and polymethylmethacrylate beads (PMMA). Some doctors can also reuse ordinary fat that comes from your own thigh or belly.
Although more long-lasting than Botox, the effects of these treatments can still fade away within four to six months. People often feel excited about their results initially, and more disappointed as the days tick by and another expensive treatment is required to maintain a consistent look.
Here’s something important to keep in mind: Non-surgical cosmetic procedures are not without significant risks. Injections and fillers aren’t always successful and can have side effects like acne, bruising, bleeding, pain, swelling, lumps, rashes, and long-lasting unevenness in the skin. In rare cases, people even experience serious skin infections, permanent nerve damage, and blindness.
In fact, some people discover too late that they are allergic to these injections, or something goes wrong during the procedure. This can cause months or even years of pain and embarrassment.
When facial injections go wrong, you may need emergency treatment, visits to the dermatologist, help from a plastic surgeon, and medication to support the healing process. It’s a high cost to pay in the pursuit of looking younger.
