Color Combos You Never Thought Of Before

Break out of your color comfort zone!

Colors are powerful! They play a significant role in how you feel and the effect you give off to the world.

One of the best parts about Dressing Your Truth is that it opens you up to a world of color that works perfectly for your Type.

Whether you’re brand new or have been with me for years, you probably have color combos that fall within your comfort zone—combos that feel like you, or that feel like they work really well for your Type.

But there are so many different combos you’ve probably never thought of before!

Let’s take a look at some of the unique and interesting color combos!

High-Contrast Combinations

High-Contrast colors are also called Complementary Colors on the color wheel. This means they are on opposite sides of a color wheel and work very well together.

These are great when you want to feel confident, powerful, and make a statement.

Based on your Type, high-contrast combos will look different. For example, a Type 2 high-contrast will look much more subtle than a bold, Type 4 high-contrast combo!

Something to note: you may not want to wear high-contrast combos day after day. They carry a lot of punch and can be tiring on the eyes (and on your energy).

Low Contrast Combinations

Wearing low-contrast colors can be a game-changer in how you approach putting together harmonious outfits. They create a cohesive and balanced appearance, minimizing harsh contrasts that sometimes draw attention away from your face.

Notice how “low contrast” can look so different across the Types, and how the keywords still fit perfectly. Type 1 still looks bright and light (and oh, so cute!). Type 2 is effortlessly elegant, with a soft and subtle appearance. Type 3 is rocking a rich and dynamic vibe. And Type 4 is knocking it out of the park with a bold, striking wow factor.

Monochromatic Color Combos

Have you ever tried a monochromatic look? Some Type combos (such as a Type 3/4) are more drawn to this style than others, but all Types and Type combos can wear them!

Embracing a monochromatic palette creates a sophisticated look that exudes confidence. By wearing different shades and tones of a single color, you create a visually elongated silhouette. Whether you’re going for a casual or formal look, the monochromatic colors ensure you always make a fashion statement that is uniquely yours.

Warm/Cool Combinations (orange, yellow, red vs. blue, teal purple)

You can have a lot of fun with these warm/cool combos! Let’s take a look at what we mean by a warm/cool color:

Warm colors: oranges, yellows, reds
Cool colors: blues, greens, purples

Every Type can wear “warm” and “cool” colors from their Style Guides. See how it feels to mix them up!

Neutral Color Combos

Let’s chat about neutral colors for a minute! Most people think that white and black are the main neutrals that any woman can wear. While every woman can wear white, it’ll look different across all Types.

But if you’re not a Type 4, black is out! Type 4’s are the only Type that can wear black.

But have no fear—every Type has neutrals! (And the best part is…most women never miss their black!)

  • Type 1: white, navy, chocolate brown
  • Type 2: gray, feathered soft cream, navy, charcoal, taupe
  • Type 3: brown, wheat, ivory, dark peacock, or dark plum
  • Type 4: black and white

Neutrals serve as a blank canvas, allowing you to effortlessly mix and match with other colors and patterns. They help you create an easy, charming style. You can wear them casually on a daily basis, or dress them up when you’re going out for something fancier, whether it’s a date, a dinner, or a funeral.

Branching out into new color combos? Follow this tip.

Make sure to try on everything in natural daylight in front of a full-length mirror. Pay attention to the colors and the fabrication together and make sure they are also complementary. For example, if you wear too much brown and swampy green, and the fabrications are loose and flowy, you could look frumpy. Pay attention to your first impression.

And trust that as you experiment, you will hone your style as the months and years go by! Take photos and create a collection of your outfits so you know what works well together.
